In the thick of it…

As part of DW’s sports coverage I was recently asked to go to Germany’s EURO 2016 qualifier in Gelsenkirchen. I had to do a live telephone interview before and after the game, a written post-match report and I also recorded and cut soundbites from the players, for our English language radio shows too.

It was a treat to be given the chance to report from the game, as we often have to do so much football journalism from our desks these days. The match ended in a 1-1 draw – which felt like a loss for the Germans – but irrespective of what the local fans thought: I still had a great time. Continue reading

Welcome to the new year!

MosmanDaily_Dec2013Now recharged after returning from Australia, it’s time for me to wish you all a belated Happy New Year!

My trip down under was enjoyable as it allowed me to catch up with family and friends and do some press for my new book “Batting for Berlin”. I did a bunch of interviews with various radio channels from Sydney and around Australia, such as the ABC, 2GB and 4BC (Brisbane).

I also landed in my local newspaper, the Mosman Daily. That was quite an honour. After all these years living in Germany, it’s been a while since I appeared in there!! Continue reading

We won a prize!

Grimme Online Award Winners 2013Together with my trainee intern colleagues at Deutsche Welle, I have finally won a prize. After 10 years of journalistic activity. Not bad, eh?

For our project “Plan B” – documenting young Europeans and how they are fighting back to beat the financial crisis – we won the prestigious Grimme Online Award. The Grimme is one of Germany’s most renowned journalism prizes. At the event in Cologne on Friday, there was a cocktail event and everything! Continue reading
