Breakfast radio

For the past few months I’ve been getting up early to talk sport on Radio National’s breakfast programme.

It’s not a permanent gig – I’ve been subbing in for their normal sports guru Warwick Hadfield, who is away on an extended break – but it’s been an interesting period to be covering sport.

Over the past month the Women’s Football World Cup, the Cricket World Cup and Wimbledon have all provided plenty of storylines.

Back on air

So, I’m back on the horseABC news reader Leslie – reading the news and helping produce radio shows at ABC NewsRadio in Sydney. That didn’t take too long.

The team is great, the content is interesting and ever-changing, and the banana bread in the canteen is pretty good too. What more could you wish for? It’s interesting how landing at the ABC means that I have, in a way, come full circle. Continue reading

In the thick of it…

As part of DW’s sports coverage I was recently asked to go to Germany’s EURO 2016 qualifier in Gelsenkirchen. I had to do a live telephone interview before and after the game, a written post-match report and I also recorded and cut soundbites from the players, for our English language radio shows too.

It was a treat to be given the chance to report from the game, as we often have to do so much football journalism from our desks these days. The match ended in a 1-1 draw – which felt like a loss for the Germans – but irrespective of what the local fans thought: I still had a great time. Continue reading
